I was just reading about “Blue Zones”. Places in the world where people live longer, healthier and happier than anywhere else on earth. The five blue zones are as follows: The Italian island of Sardinia, Okinawa in Japan, Loma Linda in California, the island of Ikaria in Greece; and the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica.
So while reading about blue zone the constant question popping in my mind is “Why do people there live longer and have healthier lives than others?”
While reading about it got to know, genetics play a very small role and living a healthy lifestyle plays a bigger role.
And the 7 key factors which lead to a healthy lifestyle and further lead you to live longer are as follows:
FOLLOW ACTIVE LIFESTYLE
The key factor in living longer and healthier is doing regular physical activity. Be active in performing daily tasks. Walk up to get your daily groceries, when house helps are on holiday clean your house on your own, cook your own meals. It all adds up and makes you mobile for longer hours. Apart from all this, you should play any sport of your choice and plan your exercise workouts also based on the time you have on your hand.
Enjoy physical and mental activities every day for good mental health which leads to living longer.
Stress is the key factor which leads to age-related diseases. So it’s very important to know what activities help you in destressing. Keeping yourself physically active actually helps in reducing stress levels too.
Do any activity which really helps your mind and body take rest and make you feel relaxed and happy. Be it dancing, knitting, tennis, music, etc.
EAT YOUR VEGGIES AND FRUITS
Diet plays a very important role in living longer and healthier. People living in the blue zone eat a plant-based diet. A healthy balanced diet is a key for long life. On a daily basis eat a lot of seasonal fruits and vegetables. Along with your greens eat a moderate quantity of whole grains and nuts. In smaller amounts consume your meat, fish and dairy products too. So complete healthy diet is so important for living longer.
If you want to live longer, stop eating when you are feeling only about 80% full, leaving a little room to help digestion. Eating less helps you age slower.
People in the blue zone eat less and follow this rule of eating only till they are 80% full.
We human beings are social creatures. Meeting up in a group often leads to a happier version of oneself. If you belong to a social group or have close friends that have a general attitude of positivity, it will rub off on you.
Find a group or make close friends with whom you meet regularly and enjoy the interaction or play chess or cricket with them.
Your social network plays a big role in making you a happier and well-rounded person.
SPEND TIME WITH FAMILY
Time slips by as we rush to complete different task throughout the week and shuffling between home and office. But spending quality time together is the best way we have to show each other that we care and that our families are important. Make an extra effort to meet elders back home if you staying away from family for work.
A happy family helps boost good health and longevity.
HAVE A PURPOSE
People in the blue zone place a lot of emphasis on “reason for a being”. Or in an easy way you can say, a reason for getting up in the morning. Having a sense of direction or goal whether it’s making school tiffin for kids or getting them ready in the morning or going out for groceries, meeting friends for a workout, taking the pet for a walk it’s more likely to give you a positive attitude which leads to longevity.
Higher sense of purpose also helps in reducing the risk of disability, stroke, heart disease, sleep issues, and other health problems.
